Rose City Comic Con in Portland is a comic con in its third year and this is the second year I have attended. It was a blast!

There was some incredible cosplay. (These are some of my pictures I highly recommend searching social media tags for more great cosplay.)

I also got to see Geek Chic gaming tables. Which were not only beautiful hardwood tables, but also custom gaming tables for the serious table top gamer. They also only use sustainably forested domestic hardwoods, a win for sustainability and gaming.

These tables run from around $3,000 to $20,000 depending on design and customization and currently have a year wait. However, I was very impressed by the designs and quality of the pieces.

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising campus in downtown Los Angeles gets to play host to different exhibits and galleries at their museum. One of my favorites to see yearly is the television costume design display.
"For the ninth year, this annual exhibition celebrates the art and artistry of Primetime Emmy® Nominated Costume Designers and Costume Supervisors, including costumes from Bessie, Better Call Saul, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Once Upon a Time, Peter Pan Live!, Reign, and 2015 Emmy nominees for Outstanding Costumes Gotham, The Mindy Project,Olive Kitteridge, and Wolf Hall. The exhibition is organized by guest curator Mary Rose, costume designer and past member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Costume Design & Supervision Peer Group."
This exhibit is free and open to the public and will run until September 26th.

The Craft & Folk Art Museum is my favorite museum on Miracle Mile, they have always been host to some incredible exhibits and their current exhibits are no exception.
Both exhibits are on display through September 6th.
(Selected works are shown below.)

Art and Other Tactics is an exhibition of contemporary work by veteran artists. It is a incredibly moving powerful exhibit of mixed artwork from veterans across all military branches of all ages.
(Note: Some of the artwork deals with upsetting themes.)

A Battle Lost:8030, 2015
Jenn Hassin, Air Force (2005-2009)
This piece is formed from 8,030 rolls of paper made from military uniforms. It pays tribute to the 8,030 veterans who committed suicide in 2014. Hassin hopes to educate the public about the suicide rate among veterans.
Faith in Myself, Faith in My Leadership, Faith in the Oath I Swore for my Country..., 2011
Teri McCans, Army (2003-2011)
This hanging memorial is composed of imprinted ID tags that serve to personalize the fallen. They identify each person as a friend, sibling, relative or spouse, the relationships left behind are all that remain.

Pretty Little Things, 2015
Jessica Putnam-Phillips, Air Force (1995-2003)
Taking an image usually associated with domesticity and service, Putnam-Phillips created heirloom serving plates that highlight the strength of female soldiers in combat.

The Marvel Experience

Back in February I attended "The Marvel Experience" at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The experience toured again this summer and stopped in Philadelphia, Chicago, New York City, and St. Louis. Upcoming tour dates and locations are to be announced soon.
"S.H.I.E.L.D. has assembled Marvel’s Avengers to battle Red Skull and HYDRA and they need your help! Sign up as a S.H.I.E.L.D. Recruit at the world’s first ever Super Hero Recruitment Tour. Become part of this ‘all ages’ experience in the immersive, Domed attraction, as you learn about your favorite heroes and villains, all while sharpening your own super powers!"
If you are a fan of Marvel films, you should attend, if you are a fan of Marvel TV shows you should attend, if you are a fan of Marvel comics you should attend. If you are any kind of Marvel fan you should attend. It was unlike anything I had been to and it was a fantastic experience.
